On the heels of the Spanish grapefruit growing season, the Spanish Lemon and Grapefruit Interprofessional Association (ALIMPO) has released its official data regarding the 2011/2012 season. This report indicates that total Spanish grapefruit production for this recent season was approximately 60,000 tons, of which – as with previous years – the large majority was destined for export.

According to ALIMPO’s director, José Antonio García, Spanish export quantities have remained steady at approximately 50,000 tons with regards to the previous two years, while exports by competitors such as South Africa and Florida have suffered losses. This fact goes to support the steadfast position of Spanish grapefruit as burgeoning leaders in the international marketplace.

The main destination of Spanish grapefruit exports is France, which accounts for more than 60% of sales, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom.
