During their cultivation period, agricultural products are subject to regulations related not only to the diseases that can affect the plants, but also to the chemical treatments normally applied in farming. In particular, strict regulations apply to the use of fertilizers, which increase productivity, and phytosanitary products, used to eliminate pests. In parallel to this, legislation has also been passed on so-called integrated production, a system that is more compatible with environmental protection.

Chemical fertilizers have been fundamental for increasing crop productivity. However, their artificial component means that controls have to be in place in order to both ensure food safety and prevent any damage caused to soil and water sources. Measures adopted include legislation to set up an authorized fertilizer register.
