Spain has traditionally been a fishing country and its inhabitants have always eaten fish on a regular basis. The importance of fishing activity and fish consumption has prompted wide-ranging legislation on health, hygiene, sales, water quality and particularly on fish and shellfish farming.

The concern for preserving fish stocks has led Spanish authorities to establish minimum measures for approving the sale of fishery products and set identification guidelines enabling consumers to have sufficient information about the product they are purchasing. There are also regulations in place for the sale of fishery products in wholesale fish markets.
