Production & Trade Regulations

Livestock & Fresh Meat

To guarantee the quality of fresh meat, both the European Union and Spain have drawn up wide-ranging legislation addressing all kinds of issues to ensure that animals are in a good condition before entering the food chain. This is why regulations are in place for issues relating to diseases and diet, both of which have raised concerns among consumers following several cases. Regulations also protect animals, to ensure that any suffering is prevented during their lifespan and at the time of slaughter. Labelling standards have also been established to trace the route taken by the animal at all times throughout the process, together with hygiene protocols for meat handling.

Veterinary Care

Both the European Union and Spain have approved extensive regulation related to the measures to be taken to prevent animals destined for human consumption catching diseases that might be spread to the people who subsequently eat them. Recent diseases, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or bird flu, are just two examples in which governments have introduced numerous rules. However, there are also controls in place to regulate the animal diseases that must be declared and the medication that must be given.
