42st edition of the Cabrales cheese competition

The 42st edition of the Cabrales cheese festival, organized by the Regulatory Board of the D.O.P. Cabrales Cheese Protected Designation of Origin, opens its doors one again this year between Monday 20 August and Sunday 26 in the Asturian village of Arenas de Cabrales. This regional event will include numerous gastronomic, entertainment and folklore-themed events.

The official opening of the festival takes place at 10 am with a tasting of Cabrales cheese sandwiches for all participants, and ends on Sunday with the jury's decision, the presentation of the award for the best cheese and, as in customary in this type of events, the auctioning of the winning cheese.

Highlights of the program’s gastronomic activities –particularly related with Cabrales cheese–, are the commented tasting which takes place from Monday to Friday at 11 am and 4 pm in the tasting room at the Cabrales D.O.P. Regulatory Board. Another feature is that throughout the whole of Thursday and Wednesday there is a chance to visit the “Mercau Astur” market in Plaza del Castañeu square, and on Thursday there is also a visit to the Cares Cave-Exhibition, with free admission. This is also the venue for the Cabrales cheese-making workshop for children.
